FREE TUTORIALS

1999

A show of unwillingness to mediate between an artist run space Three Month Gallery in Liverpool (founded by Chris Evans, Duncan Hamilton and Andrew Small) and neighbouring art school students – on the part of their tutors – provokes a tour whereby various artists enter art schools unannounced and uninvited – offering students the opportunity to freely discuss work with a colleague.

Three trips take place in January and February 1999 to: Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Northumbria, Newcastle; Manchester Metropolitan University and Liverpool John Moores Art School; Central St. Martins, London and Kingston University. Visiting artists: Olöf Björnsdottir, Godfrey Burke, Damien Duffy, Chris Evans, Alex Frost, Kate Gray, Duncan Hamilton, Ewan Imrie, David Mackintosh, Tom O’Sullivan, Elizabeth Price, Andrew Small, Joanne Tatham, Sarah Tripp, Padraig Timoney, David Wilkinson and Caroline Woodley.

Two subsequent conferences are held at CCA, Glasgow (27th February 1999) and Tate Liverpool (20th March 1999) and transcribed in the publication Free Tutorials (All Horizons Club, 1999).
